Balboa Island Commonly referred to by locals as “The Island”
Balboa Island is the most well known and densely populated of all the islands in Newport Bay and is better described as a collection of 3 islands, the main island, Little Balboa, and the private Collins Island. With over 3,000 full time residents and approximately 2,000 homes, the population swells during the summer months with short term renters flocking to the charming island. Marine Ave and Agate Ave are home to local small businesses including restaurants, bakeries, local crafts, and the islands only bar, the Village Inn, which has been there for over 80 years. Balboa Island is connected to Newport Beach by a 2 lane bridge and the famous Balboa Island Ferry that takes cars and people to and from the Balboa Peninsula. A public boardwalk surrounds the island and is bustling year-round with foot traffic. Some may recognize Balboa Island’s best-known treats, the Balboa Bar and the Frozen Banana, from the sitcom “Arrested Development” and it’s Banana Stand.
Balboa Island is commonly referred to by locals as “The Island” and hosts many events throughout the year organized by the Balboa Island Improvement Association (BIIA). They include the Balboa Island parade, art walk, concerts in the park, all-island garage sale, holiday home decorating contest, and the Newport Harbor Christmas Boat Parade. Whether you’re looking for a vacation rental, second home, or beach house Balboa Island is the quintessential Southern California community.
