    If you’re looking for a tight-knit, entertainment-filled, old-fashioned community to call home, look no further than North Orange County’s very own city of Brea. Before getting into what modern-day Brea has to offer, allow me to give you a bit of insight into the history of the city itself.

    Brea was originally migrated to and founded just prior to the ‘Black Gold Rush’ of the early 20th century. It all began in the year 1894 when a man by the name of Abel Stearns sold roughly 1,200 acres of land, in what used to be Olinda Village, to the Union Oil Company. One short year later in 1895, the first oil well was drilled and began to expand from that point on, filling the foothills with numerous wooden oil towers on what would become known as the Brea-Olinda Oil Field. Following this expansion of the local oil industry, in 1908, the town of Randolph, neighboring that of Olinda, had emerged in order to house and provide various establishments for the oil workers and their families. A few years later, in 1911, both Randolph and Olinda had merged to form one large town by the name of Brea, which happens to be Spanish for ‘tar’. Moving forward to 1917, with a population of 732 people at the time, Brea was officially incorporated as the eighth city of Orange County. 

    Jumping to the present, after much redevelopment, expansion, and continued migration, the city of Brea is now home to just over 45,000 people and is comprised of roughly 12 square miles of land. It is filled with numerous tourist attractions and has become known as North Orange County’s destination for both shopping and dining. Some of these attractions include the Brea Mall, Brea Marketplace, Downtown Brea, and Union Plaza, along with several others. The community has several beautiful and well-maintained parks to offer its surrounding families as well as an immense amount of trees and foliage lining the streets throughout. 

    In addition to these perks, the weather, affordability, and schools of Brea truly make it an ideal city to reside in. During the summer months, the temperature’s average highs range from the mid to high 80s while in the winter months, the average highs range from the mid to low 70s; talk about beautiful weather. In regards to the affordability of Brea, the 2020 median home price of the area has itself positioned in the low $700,000s. This places Brea in the top 10 most affordable cities of Orange County, out of a total of 34 incorporated cities that comprise the county as a whole. Finally, Brea has several prestigious schools to offer families throughout the community. As reported by GreatSchools.org, some of the best schools for each grade level include William E. Fanning Elementary School (Rated 9/10), Brea Junior High School (Rated 8/10), and Brea Olinda High School (Rated 9/10).
